You searched for actor: Granville Bates

Balding, worried-looking character actor of the 1930's with a strong line in lawyers, judges, sheriffs, mayors and storekeepers. Could play choleric or obtuse. Had a career in dramatic plays on Broadway from 1925 to 1935. In films from 1929. Well-received performance in "The Great Man Votes" as a corrupt, incompetent mayor. Best performance towards the end of his life as the bewildered judge in "My Favorite Wife". Bosley Crowther (May 31) considered his performance a 'masterpiece of comic creation'. That same year, Bates stood out in the otherwise forgettable "Men Against the Sky". He died soon afterward of a heart attack.
